Toothless Tutorial

A few Toothless tips!! Posted this on my instagram and I figured that I mind as well post it here as well.

I  thought that this would interest people wanting to draw Toothless more "on model" (the way he is in the film). Hope this helps! (I did this without reference, so I can't guarantee that everything is 100% accurate). Anyways, here goes.

I will refer to Toothless's wings as primary (his actual wings) secondary (the wings at the base of his tail that resemble a bird's tail) and tail fins (the fins at the tip of his tail, the one that Hiccup makes a prosthetic for). I just want to identify some tips that help me draw him realistically (haha, he's a cartoon, I know).

1. Toothless has 6 wing "fingers," instead of 5 like you would expect. His wing "arms" are much shorter than his primary wing bone. The last part of his wing, corresponding to your pinkie finger, actually points back towards his body.

2. Where his primary wings meet his secondary wings. The primary wings actually overlap the secondary wings, slightly, as seen here. Completely outstretched, the secondaries are as long as the space between his final wing bone and body. The secondaries have 3 bones, all originating from one spot on his body. Also, one common misconception, his secondary wings are actually slightly smaller than his tail fins. In perspective (with the tail fins facing away from you) they seem much larger, but it's just an illusion :) fun fact.

3. Tail fins. Toothless is missing his left tail fin (just like Hiccup is missing his left leg :D significance!). Anyway, he has 5 bones in his tail fin, with the second to last one being significantly longer than the other 4 (another common misconception, I often see them drawn all the same length, but each varies in length). The tail fin here is completely extended, but Toothless can fold it pretty much completely flat to his tail. I will try and post a tail tutorial in the future.

That's it! Sorry it's so long. Feel free to reference this image and things. And of course, this isn't the only way to draw Toothless, you can stylize him any way you want! Have fun :D
